French dogs….

"Errrm…..now tell me what seems to be the problem.."

“Errrm…..now tell me what seems to be the problem..”

Sorry – had to post some photos of dogs……the French just love their dogs, you even see them in shopping bags in the supermarket. My favourite breed of dog is the Golden Retriever – reminds me of my own Holly

The noble Louis

The noble Louis who we will be looking after soon

Louis is the most adorable animal –  he loves a cuddle, he’s got that glazed look in his eye because he’s being tickled…

Here's the lovely Teddy again…hope he's well

I love old dogs – there is something so gentle about them, we looked after Teddy recently and he was no trouble whatsoever, except he kept following you to the fridge all the time

French country wine: Gaillac Rouge, Domaine Philemon

French country wine

French country wine – winemaker Mathieu Vieules with his Gaillac Rouge made from the Braucol grape variety of SW France

This is how we’ve been buying our wine recently – straight from the barrel at the market. It’s really quite a decent ‘everyday drinking’  dry red wine. Not too strong, a bit tart, with a hint of a peppery flavour.

Domaine Philémon is from the Gailliac region of SW France in Villeneuve-sur-Vere a small village on the Vere river. The Vieules family who make it have had a vineyard in Villeneuve since 1804. Today the vineyard is run by Mathieu Vieules who also grows wheat and sunflowers http://www.winetraditions.com/domaine-philemon/

Wikipedia says: “Wine expert Jancis Robinson describes the wines made from the Fer grape (known  locally as ‘Braucol’) as “interestingly perfumed” with a rhubarb aroma. The wines are often full-bodied with dark ruby colours and concentrated fruit flavours.” Not bad for 1.70 euro a litre!

French monogram letters for linen

French cotton monogram letters

French monogram letters made out of felt

In the same shop as the earrings, I found these monogram letters. They had so many it was difficult to choose which ones, but I decided on these which I’ll sew to my piece of  hemp coloured linen to make a monogrammed curtain for below the sink in the kitchen.

Apparently you just sew over each letter – sound easy enough (famous last words) – I’ll show you the result when it’s finished!

French earrings and Jacques Fath scarf

French earrings 'boucle d'oreilles'

I bought these little french earrings today at Limognes made of (‘pate de verre’) paste and glass, they’re so pretty and probably from the 1950s.

French scarf

Vintage French Jacques Fath scarf

They’ll go well with this vintage french scarf, from the 1950s. I’ve just researched ‘Jacques Fath’ and he was a famous Parisian fashion designer, who was the star of haute couture and died at aged only 42 in 1954. He was among the three most influential post war fashion designers, the other two were Christian Dior and Pierre Balmain.

His stunning New Look gowns are investment pieces apparently! See this link http://www.queensofvintage.com/one-to-collect-jacques-fath/

He also designed costumes for a number of films including ‘The Red Shoes’.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacques_Fath

The snow has arrived in SW France!

The Pigeonnier with a light dusting of snow

The Pigeonnier with a light dusting of snow

Woke up this morning to snow! On French radio there is snow all over the Aveyron and the Massif Central. Leyla on the left and Damien on the right are roofing the Pigeonnier with traditional clay tiles – they need a good head for heights.  They  came around last night bringing a bottle of red wine for an ‘apero’ and then stayed overnight camping inside……brrrrrr

All the old buildings around here are built with a lovely yellow stone – bit like the Cotswolds stone.

Yes this is SW France…...
